Forms of accoutrement found within fashion such as clothing, jewelry, and formal headwear serve as visual cues of expression for artist Althea Murphy-Price (Bloomington, Ind.). She is interested in how we choose to define ourselves; the subconscious internal versus the superficial external. Supplemental Ornament represents an ongoing exploration for Murphy-Price employing synthetic hair in sculpture, installations, printmaking and drawings to address issues of identity and cultural associations.
Althea Murphy-Price lives and works in Bloomington, Ind. where she has served as an assistant professor of art at Indiana University since 2006. In 2001, she earned a bachelor of arts in studio fine arts from Spelman College (Atlanta, Ga.); a master of arts in painting and printmaking from Purdue University (West Lafayette, Ind.) in 2003; and a master of fine arts in printmaking from Tyler School of Art at Temple University (Elkins Park, Pa.) in 2005. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions at regional and national venues that include Howard Center for the Arts (Baltimore, Md.); Hiestand Galleries, Miami University (Oxford, Ohio); Arts Consortium of Cincinnati (Cincinnati, Ohio); and Catherine J. Smith Gallery, Appalachian State University, (Boone, N.C.).
