The Cincinnati Arts Association and the Weston Art Gallery in the Aronoff Center for the Arts presents Selected Dance Photographs by Sandy Underwood, Cincinnati’s own performing arts photographer who has been documenting area productions for the past two decades.
Sandy Underwood has made a successful career as a performing arts photographer, lending her special eye and sensitive talents to capturing those important moments on stage for theaters such as Playhouse in the Park, Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati Ballet, and Contemporary Dance Theater, along with numerous university, community and alternative theater groups. There is hardly a current area performer who has not re-experienced his or her stage appearance in one of Underwood’s photographs. Underwood’s exhibition, which includes 45 pieces from 1971 to 1977 for a span of more than twenty years, includes striking images of principal dancers with the Cincinnati Ballet; Peggy Lyman, famous for her solo work with the Martha Graham company; vintage Contemporary Dance Theater works; Worth Gardner’s triumphs at U.C.‘s College-Conservatory of Music, and some jubilant moments of Shawn Womack Dance Projects. Underwood fits well within the company of her peers represented in the Halsted Collection.
