Exhibition Details
The three summer exhibitions at the Cincinnati Arts Association's Alice F. and Harris K. Weston Art Gallery in the Aronoff Center for the Arts are linked by artificial interpretations of nature: Artificial by Nature: Mixed Media Installation by Shawna Guip; Iteration: Mixed Media Installation by Celene Hawkins; and Flock: Site-Specific Installation by Sophia Hayes.
A central premise of Celene Hawkins' (Deer Park, OH) work is mining the visual territory between order and chaos, permanence and impermanence. In her sculptures and installations, she creates forms and defines spaces that, upon initial viewing, appear random or entropic, but ultimately resolve into an orderly, beautiful and controlled vision. For Iteration, Hawkins created a new installation that features an artificial environment that immerses the viewer in a world that is part familiar and part surreal.
Celene Hawkins received a bachelor of fine arts in sculpture from Columbus College of Art and Design (Columbus, OH) in 1992 and a master of fine arts in sculpture from the University of Cincinnati in 1994. She has exhibited extensively in such local and regional venues as The Fitton Center in Hamilton, OH; Mac's Farm and Sculpture Center in Cincinnati, OH; Carnegie Arts Center in Covington, KY; KZF Gallery; the former Suzanna Terrill Gallery and the Northern Kentucky University Art Gallery. She has completed public sculpture commissions for Fidelity Investments in Covington, KY; and Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Loveland, OH. Since 1994, she has worked with her husband as a partner in Hawkins and Hawkins Custom.
