Exhibition Details
Robert Ladislas Derr (Columbus, OH) combines photography, video and performance in his multimedia works that provoke questions about life and the process of making art. With In Play, he uses two two-channel video compositions, still photographs, and the game of ping-pong as a means to examine and comment on the "field of play" within the art world. Engaging eight artists and writers of influence or like-mindedness in five-minute games each, Derr seeks to represent the cross-fertilization of ideas in the art world.
Robert Ladislas Derr has a bachelor of fine arts in photography from the Art Academy of Cincinnati (1993) and a master of fine arts in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design (2002). He lives and works in Columbus, OH, where he serves as assistant professor of photography at Ohio State University. He has performed and exhibited worldwide at such venues as the Blueroom (Rome, Italy), Photographic Resource Center (Boston, MA), American Academy in Rome (Rome, Italy), Bissaya Barreto's Foundation (Coimbra, Portugal), Irish Film Institute (Dublin, Ireland), Art Interactive (Cambridge, MA), DiVA Festival (New York, NY), and International Festival of Electronic Art 404 (Rosario, Argentina). He has received numerous grants and fellowships that include an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Ohio Arts Council and a stipend from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council in New York City.
