Binding Connections

The Cincinnati Arts Association's Alice F. and Harris K. Weston Art Gallery in the Aronoff Center for the Arts debuts its 16th exhibition season with three new exhibitions linked by their investigations into abstraction: Limits and Boundaries: Sculpture by Jarrett Hawkins, Ascending Horizons: Paintings and Drawings by Cedric Michael Cox, and Binding Connections: Recent Drawings, Prints and Paintings by Roy Johnston. 

Roy Johnston (Oxford, Ohio) incorporates a personal catalogue of shapes, forms, colors and textures in his non-referential paintings, drawings and prints. In a career spanning more than forty years, Johnston continues to hone this work which holds endless possibilities for him. Binding Connections will include work completed during the past three years by Johnston as well as an on-site wall drawing completed in the East Gallery prior to the opening reception.

Johnston is a native of Northern Ireland. In addition to his long and distinguished career as an artist, he has served as an outstanding educator, writer, lecturer and curator. He currently resides in Oxford, Ohio, where he previously served as a visiting artist at Miami University. He has an extensive exhibition history in both his home country and the United States. In Ireland, he has exhibited his work at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (Dublin), Golden Thread Gallery (Belfast), Ulster Museum (Belfast), Fenderesky Gallery at Queen's (Belfast), and Crawford Municipal Art Gallery (Cork). In the United States, his work has been featured in exhibitions at Right Bank Gallery (New York, N.Y.), Schick Gallery at Skidmore College (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Wagner College Gallery (New York, N.Y.), Castle Gallery at the College of New Rochester (New Rochester, N.Y.), and the Dayton Art Institute (Dayton, Ohio).
