Overture Awards Scholarship Competition

Visual Art Criteria

CATEGORIES: painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, textile design, jewelry, creative woodwork, pottery, graphic design, photography and video; or combination thereof

  1. All criteria set forth in these pages apply to the Regional, Semi-Finals and Finals Competition, unless otherwise noted.
  2. Competitors will be primarily judged on, but not limited to, the following:
    • Command of medium
    • Originality/creativity
    • Technique: use of color, texture, perspective
    • Composition
  3. The following requirements, if not met, can result in a student having points deducted from his submission, or in some cases, disqualification. Please read carefully:
    • Submit 4-8 pieces of original artwork. Work copied from another artist's work or photographs is not permitted.
    • Include with your portfolio a cover sheet with title, size, medium and brief description of each piece. You can download a blank cover sheet below. The cover sheet is required.
    • All portfolio cases and artwork must be clearly labeled with the student's name and school.
    • Size limit: 30 x 40, not including mat.
    • 2D artwork should be matted (preferably white or off-white), not framed.
    • Video submissions:
      • Time Limit: 1.5 to 5 minutes in length
      • May select 5 minutes from a longer piece. Include a one-page synopsis that states where the segment occurs.
      • Must be in DVD format.
  4. For Regional and Semi-Final Competitions
    • 3D work must be submitted as slides or photographs. Slides must be in a carousel or on CD. Provide more than one view of the piece. Slides or photos must be numbered with a corresponding number on the portfolio cover sheet. Images on CD must be submitted in .jpg, .tiff, or .gif format.
    • Work that is too large or unavailable due to another competition or exhibition may also be submitted as slides or photos per the above instructions.
  5. For the Finals Competition: the actual artwork must be submitted. The work will be on display in the Aronoff Center for approximately one week prior to the Finals Competition.
  6. The artwork must be delivered to the competition site and picked up according to the guidelines in notifications mailed to students. The Cincinnati Arts Association is not responsible for submissions not picked up in a timely manner.
  7. Finalists must attend the Finals Competition rehearsal (refer to timeline), and be prepared to read an artists statement summarizing their work and vision. Finalists must attend the Finals Competition/Awards Ceremony, in order to be eligible for a scholarship.
