Poetry in Motion: Poetry Slam

Invigorate your poetry curriculum! Benjamin Hughes will guide your students through the process of preparing for a Poetry Slam. Using your participant’s previous written work and poems, he will inject energy by defining, composing, performing, and a judging poetry slam, with the overall purpose of instilling a greater appreciation for POETRY! This is an excellent program to hold during Black History Month, National Poetry Month and many other occasions.

Recommended Ages: Grades 5-Adult
Maximum Audience: 150
Length: 45 minutes
Cost: $325 first session/$100 each additional

Technical Needs

  • Artist Arrival: 30-45 minutes prior to start of presentation.
  • Organization representative should meet the artist and show him to the presentation area.
  • The artist would like an organization representative to introduce him.
  • Audience Participation: some (not all) students should have pre-written work ready
  • There is a Question and Answer session following the presentation. It lasts 10-15 minutes, included in run time.
  • Equipment needed by the artist:
    • 1 microphone/lapel mic (for large audiences)
    • stand for paper
    • easel
  • Classroom or large gathering space (auditorium) is suitable for this presentation. Minimum amount of space needed for presentation:
    15’ x 15’
  • Please provide drinking water for the artist.
