Movement for Actors Playshop

October 11, 2008
9:30-11:30 AM
Aronoff Center, Rehearsal Hall (enter through Fifth Third Bank Theater)

Learning lines, remembering blocking, wearing costumes and make-up that's just the jumping-off point when we're acting. Creating a character is, as we know, embracing all the tools you have, inside and out and this playshop will help us do that as we find ways to use our whole bodies to create theatre and REALLY connect with our fellow cast-mates. We'll explore best of techniques that are inspired by DellArte, LeCoq, Laban, View Points, and simple clown. Come ready to move and have a blast!

Guest Instructor, Aretta Baumgartner

Aretta has free-lanced as a mask, movement and puppetry specialist all over the country. She was the Great Lakes Regional Director of Puppeteers of America, has received the Cincinnati Entertainment Award for Best Supporting Actress and an Applause Award from Puppeteers of America. She has been a professional performing artist for 15 years and has worked with everyone from the Muppets, to the State Puppet Theatre of Stara Zagora, Bulgaria to Cincinnati's Madcap Puppets.


Vocal Techniques for the Stage

Learn fundamental techniques to good voice production and articulation for the actor. The class will receive instruction on how to put your voice to work for you as you create a character.

Guest Instructor, Rocco Dal Vera

Mr. Dal Vera is a Professor at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music. His book Voice: Onstage and Off, co-authored with Robert Barton, is in use by a number of College and University theater programs. He lectures internationally on vocal violence and the effects of emotion on the voice and is one of a handful of certified instructors in the Alba Emoting technique. Rocco is also the founding editor of the journal Voice and Speech Review for the Voice and Speech Trainers Association.


Creative Writing Workshop

October 11, 2008
9:30 AM-2:30 PM
Aronoff Center, Green Room

Everything from how to get your next story idea to specific tips to strengthen fiction, poetry, and play/scriptwriting will be discussed. Examples from movies, plays, and poems will be used to show how good writing is not about type or genre, but technique and hard work. Emphasis is not on in-class writing, but learning as much as you can so that when you leave, you feel empowered to be the best writer you can be!


Guest Instructor: Nick Hartmann

Nick is a graduate of Wilmington College of Ohio with a degree in English and Theatre. In the past, he has won awards for poetry, short story, and playwriting. His plays have been produced in equity and non-equity productions, and Nick was a recent finalist for the 2006 Heideman Award at Actors Theatre of Louisville. He is currently working on bring his screenplay to production.
