Cincinnati Arts Association Presents:
Overture Awards Final Competition & Awards Ceremony
|
Saturday, March 2, 2013 1:00pm
Jarson-Kaplan Theater
The Overture Awards is a program that recognizes, encourages and rewards excellence in the arts among Tri-state students in grades 9-12. Its mission is to encourage arts education as an integral part of a student's academic experience and to create an environment that encourages training in, and appreciation of, the arts. The Overture Awards Scholarship Competition is the area's largest solo arts competition and offers scholarships in six artistic disciplines: creative writing, dance, instrumental music, theater, visual art, and vocal music. Students may win a $3,000 scholarship (one awarded in each discipline) or a $500 finalist scholarship (a total of 18 awarded). Judges at all levels of the competition are drawn from the professional arts community.
The Overture Awards Regional Competitions were held in January at Aronoff Center for the Arts (Dance), Saint Ursula Academy (Instrumental Music), University of Cincinnati Blue Ash (Theater), Xavier University (Visual Art) and Immanuel United Methodist Church, KY (Vocal Music). The top 20 percent of competitors in each discipline advanced to the Semi-Finals, held at the Aronoff Center January 18 - 19, 2013. Twenty-four finalists (four in each discipline) will then compete in the Finals Competition at the Aronoff Center.
Now in its 17th year, The Overture Awards was launched in 1996 by the Cinergy Foundation (now Duke Energy) and Leadership Cincinnati (a Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce program). The program is administered by the Cincinnati Arts Association, which operates and manages the Aronoff Center and Music Hall. The Overture Awards also relies on hundreds of volunteers from the community who help raise funds, adjudicate and manage the competitions, and nurture the program.
Winners will be announced immediately following the competition.
