Backstage Magic:
A Science Spectacular

Ever wonder how they make fog, fire, flashes, and other "FX" for the stage at places like the Aronoff Center and Playhouse in the Park? Join a special effects designer and award-winning magician for a live look backstage into the science behind the set! Learn about the history of special effects, the dangers of fire and open flame, and the modern scientific methods used to make the audience believe they’re witnessing DANGER, when what they’re seeing is pure magic. Available as a performance or workshop.

Recommended Ages: Grades K-12

Maximum Audience:
  • Performance—400
  • Workshop—40
Length: 30 or 45 minutes

Cost:
  • Performance—$350 first session/$125 each additional; full day $650
  • Workshop—$300 first session/$125 each additional; full day $750

Technical Needs

  • Artist Arrival: 45 minutes prior to presentation.
  • Organization representative should meet the artist and show him to the presentation area.
  • Audience participation: yes, no pre-selection necessary.
  • Question and Answer session — time permitting.
  • Equipment needed by artist:
    • electrical outlet
    • a small table
    • a water source (i.e., a nearby sink or water fountain)
  • Classroom or large gathering space is suitable for this presentation. Minimum amount of space needed for presentation: 8’ x 8’ (or front area of standard size classroom)
  • Please have drinking water available for the artist.
